John Harbison Snow Country
Vivaldi Oboe Concerto in F major, RV 455
Heart-warming winter melodies
Musicians from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra bring the joy of music a little closer to home; and what better time to celebrate these wholesome and eclectic pieces for oboe
than in the heart of winter?
Principal Oboe Bede Hanley kicks off the concert with Bach’s ‘Wedding Cantata’, affectionately starting the evening on a romantic note. Don’t fall too deeply though – this work is followed with John Harbison’s Snow Country, a piece that echoes the desolate Wisconsin winter in which it was composed.
The grace of the oboe is highlighted again with Vivaldi’s lively concerto before transitioning into a smoky tango with Piazzolla’s Oblivion, leaving you with just enough heat to
brave the cold as this concert comes to a close.
