J.S. Bach  St Matthew Passion

Bach’s mighty retelling of the Passion of Christ is a powerful meditation on death and spirituality that speaks to all of us at a deeply human level, regardless of religious affiliation. It is a profoundly moving story of betrayal, sacrifice, and forgiveness, told through some of the most sublime music ever written.

To perform it for us, a truly stellar cast of singers led by one of the supreme choral conductors of our time, Stephen Layton, making a welcome return to the APO. This promises to be a very special event in Auckland’s calendar.

Pre-concert talk by Richard Green at 6:45 pm in the concert chamber.

Time Change for St Matthews Passion

Due to an extended concert duration, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will be commencing the performance of J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion on Thursday 4 October at the slightly earlier time of 7:30pm.

This differs from previously advertised materials which indicate a concert start time of 8pm. The earlier start will bring the finish time closer in line with other concerts in our New Zealand Herald Premier Series, and will also assist concertgoers who use public transport. All other advertised details remain the same.

The concert duration is approximately 75 minutes for the first half, and 85 minutes for the second half, in addition to a 20-minute interval. Please note that running times are only an estimation and there may be unexpected delays – we encourage you to plan your journey accordingly.

This concert is generously supported by the Chisholm Whitney Family Charitable Trust and the Hamana Charitable Trust.
