Conductor Giordano Bellincampi
Violin Alina Ibragimova
Rossini William Tell: Overture
Bartók Violin Concerto No.2
Schubert Symphony No.5
The stunning violinist Alina Ibragimova makes a welcome return to the APO. Bartók’s rhapsodic, brooding concerto, a distillation of Hungarian folk music, is the perfect foil for her dazzling playing.
Folk music of a slightly different sort in the overture to Rossini’s opera William Tell, with the patriotic Swiss shepherds of faithfully impersonated by the orchestra. The bit everybody knows, though, is the exhilarating Galop.
When he composed his amiable Fifth Symphony, Schubert was only nineteen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we can hear the influence of Mozart and Haydn in this delightful piece, but Schubert’s own voice sings through.
