Conductor Rumon Gamba
Piano Kathryn Stott
Stravinsky Funeral Song
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.4
Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4
A night of Russian passion. In fact ‘passion’ is precisely the word for Tchaikovsky’s hyper-emotional Fourth Symphony and indeed for Tchaikovsky himself. Shattering, doom-laden fanfares herald music of a soul in torment, but a hard-won affirmation of life ultimately triumphs.
Rachmaninov’s mighty Fourth Piano Concerto calls for a soloist with an ardent heart and fingers of steel and the superb British pianist Kathryn Stott is such a musician.
The recently-rediscovered score of Igor Stravinsky’s Funeral Song will open the concert and this will be the New Zealand and Australian premiere of the piece. Funeral Song replaces Vasily Kalinnikov’s Serenade for Strings in the concert programme.
Note: this concert is on a Wednesday.
Pre-concert Talk by Kevin Bishop at 7:15 pm.
