Messiaen Les offrandes oubliées
Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No.1
Shostakovich Symphony No.10
Shostakovich’s monumental, overwhelming symphony is at once a lament for the suffering of the Soviet people under Stalin and a document of defiance. Music of exhausted, drained sadness is shockingly set against music of rage and terror, yet hope in the human spirit is never extinguished.
Saint-Saens’ enchanting concerto is a marvel of delicacy and taste, particularly the exquisite slow movement.
Messiaen’s music is suffused with his mystical Roman Catholic faith. Les offrandes oubliées centres around an orgiastic ‘race to the abyss’ of sin, but its outer movements are a window onto eternity.
Pre-concert Talk by Robert Johnson at 7:15 pm.
