James Ioelu is a New Zealand born Bass-Baritone whose voice has been described as a “commanding bass-baritone” that is “deeply resonant” with “woody tones across the range”. Recent engagements include Zuniga Carmen (English National Opera), Monterone Rigoletto (Glyndebourne Opera Tour), Leporello Don Giovanni (Garsington Opera), Capellio I Capuletti e i Montecchi (Grimeborn), Priest Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk (Birmingham Opera), and Pistola Falstaff (Garsington Opera).
James trained at the Manhattan School of Music and attended the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco before joining the National Opera Studio in London. James enjoys the support and mentorship of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation for which he is especially grateful.
