Inspire Partnership Programme

Composer Workshops

We offer an extensive workshop programme to foster opportunities for new and aspiring composers to find their orchestral voice

In partnership with the Auckland Art Gallery and as part of the 2016/2017 programme, the APO offers composers in the early stages of their career the opportunity to write works inspired by New Zealand visual art.

What do you feel when you immerse yourself in the visual work of some of this country’s finest artists?  How can we quantify those feelings and reactions?  What is the inspiration behind these works and how can we express that through sound?

Through two workshops your compositional ideas will be performed and worked on with guidance and mentoring from APO’s Composer-in-Residence Karlo Margetić, culminating in a performance of these works at the Auckland Town Hall in 2017.

‘I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the orchestra in this way over the past 2 years of workshops - it's an extraordinary and rich experience for any composer to have, and I think that the APO provides a truly extraordinary service to composer development by running such two year projects’ – Workshop participant 2015

Meet the Composer

We provide opportunities for aspiring composers to meet our Composer-in-Residence and present one of their original compositions

In these free 30-minute tutorials at the University of Auckland School of Music, the APO’s Composer-in-Residence Karlo Margetić meets and hears the work of young composers, providing valuable feedback to enhance and encourage their musical potential.

“I just wanted to thank you and the APO again for presenting me with such an outstanding experience.  In this industry, as I suppose in all others, nothing can top hands on guidance from a successful New Zealand composer with knowledge and insight to share, something I am glad to have been able to receive some of today.  Thank you again.” - Erin Fagan, 2014 tutorial attendee
