Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra regrets to announce that violinist Michael Barenboim has withdrawn from his upcoming concert performance with the APO on 17 May, due to unforeseen circumstances.
Mr Barenboim was scheduled to perform Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in the New Zealand Herald Premier Series concert ‘Organ Symphony’, and has expressed his disappointment and offered his apologies to Auckland audiences.
We are, however, delighted to announce that Italian-American violinist Francesca Dego will step in and perform the concerto in May.
Ms Dego is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young violinists on the international scene. She is signed to Deutsche Grammophon, and has released several recordings to critical acclaim. She is the winner of numerous national and international competitions, and in 2008 she was the first Italian female prize winner of the prestigious Paganini Competition (Genoa) since 1961.
The addition of Ms Dego to the concert programme complements the presence of another in-demand young woman making a name for herself in classical music – New Zealand-born conductor Gemma New. Ms New is currently Music Director for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada, and Resident Conductor for the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. She is also a former Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
This will be both Ms New’s and Ms Dego’s debut performance with the APO, and Chief Executive Barbara Glaser says it will be a popular concert with Auckland audiences. “In both Francesca Dego and Gemma New, we’re pleased to welcome two young women who are definitely artists to watch. We’re looking forward to Francesca’s performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto as part of this wonderful concert programme.”
