Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) has announced a programme change to the concert The New World, featured as part of the APO on the Shore series on 9 August and the New Zealand Herald Premier Series on 10 August.
APO Composer-in-Residence Karlo Margetić’s new percussion concerto has been withdrawn from the programme, due to timing constraints around its completion. It will instead be replaced by Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Percussion Concerto Incantations, performed by APO Principal Percussionist Eric Renick.
Renick says, “The Rautavaara is a beautiful work that really incorporates the Marimba and Vibraphone in a lyrical way. It comes with its fair share of logistical challenges for the player, but takes the listener on a complete journey from beginning to end.”
APO Chief Executive Barbara Glaser says the orchestra looks forward to working with Mr Margetić on future performances. “We remain committed to the support and growth of New Zealand music and will continue to identify other opportunities to present Karlo’s music in the future,” she says.
Mr Margetić completes his tenure as APO Composer-in-Residence at the end of 2017, and will continue to work with the APO on other activities throughout the year, including mentoring and support for upcoming composers as part of the APO Connecting programme.
