Yang Rachel Guan Ebbett

bassoon, associate principal

Yang Rachel Guan was born in China, where she was accepted into the central conservatory of Bei Jing at Age 12 with the Government scholarship and boarded for 6 years. At age 18, she decided to pursue her music study abroad; she received a full music scholarship to attend the Harid conservatory in Florida USA where she studied with Arthur Weisberg. Upon a summer of travelling and taking lessons with 5 major orchestral players in the US, Rachel fell in love with the style of the Cleveland Orchestra. She moved to Cleveland the following fall and started her Artist diploma at the Cleveland institute of music under the major influence of the Principal bassoon John Clouser.

Rachel was a participant of many summer music festivals including the Sarasota, Chautauqua, and the Pacific music festival in Japan.  She came to New Zealand upon winning the associate principal position in May 2005, and has enjoyed the life style of this beautiful land.

Rachel enjoys the outdoors, tennis, cooking and is active in teaching music in her community.
