Nicola was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in Wellington. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Victoria University of Wellington and a Diploma from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (USA). While living in Philadelphia Nicola performed as a freelance musician including working with the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra, The Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, The Philly Pops and the Opera Company of Philadelphia as well as belonging to the first ever American-Soviet Youth Orchestra in 1988.
Since 1992 Nicola has been Principal Horn of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and has appeared as a soloist many times. Other solo engagements include the Eugene Symphony (Oregon, USA), the Auckland Chamber Orchestra, the Dunedin Sinfonia, the New Zealand National Youth Choir and the Saint Matthews Chamber Orchestra, as well as recording for Radio New Zealand. In 2004 Nicola was guest Principal Horn for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (Texas, USA) to record for the Decca label.
Nicola has been Artist Teacher of horn at University of Auckland School of Music since 1993.
