Wagner  Die Meistersinger Overture

John Corigliano Concerto for Violin and Orchestra , ‘The Red Violin’

Stravinsky Petrushka

To open the 2014 season, APO Music Director Eckehard Stier presents three diverse musical masterpieces.

Wagner’s famous overture from Die Meistersinger is a tribute to a noble tradition of singers.

American composer John Corigliano’s melodic ‘The Red Violin’ Concerto was composed using themes from the music for the film of the same name, that traces the path of a spiritually haunted violin across centuries.  The concerto, known for its virtuosic writing, is performed by acclaimed British soloist Chloë Hanslip.

The concert concludes with Stravinsky’s  beloved ballet Petrushka which uses vivid orchestral colours to tell the miraculous story of a puppet who comes to life.
